Is the need for Canadian experience hidden racism?

Written By Inasmuch Community Society

There’s a resigned acceptance - to the point that it has practically become a joke among Canadian newcomers - that to get a job you must have Canadian experience.

Are we really telling newcomers that to get Canadian experience we don’t think it matters:

  • if they possess a Masters level degree from their home country

  • if they have 15 years field experience before arriving in Canada

  • that their professional experience is currently in demand

Employers want Canadian experience.

As one man struggling to find meaningful employment after emigrating to BC from Eastern Europe years ago, said “I knew that leaving my country at level 10 would mean I would have to start at level 6 in Canada. I never dreamed I would have to start at 0.”

What might employers be overlooking when only hiring based on Canadian experience?

  • exceptional candidates

  • talented people

  • individuals with first-hand experience in the field

motivated individuals who have great resilience

  • employees who want to work to provide for their families and make up for what they left behind in their country of origin

  • the fact that Refugees have lower turnover and higher retention rates

Sure there are a few things Canadian employers may need to keep in mind when hiring newcomers:

  • some individuals may need to work on their English skills

  • employers may need to get creative and provide task instructions in other languages (but with Google translate that’s a cinch)

  • your workplace will become more diversified and help you reach your diversity goals

  • you may find ways to be innovative you hadn’t previously thought of

  • you will gain some highly qualified people who will work for you for an incredible wage

In the end we all win if newcomers find good jobs and help Canadian businesses and organizations thrive. Getting jobs with great Canadian companies will have far reaching impact in helping newcomers integrate into Canadian culture and rebuild their lives in Canada.

We are better together. I know some hard working newcomers currently looking and waiting for a shot at gaining Canadian experience. Together let’s help get them working!
